Writing Consultations

DESCRIPTION OF WRITING CONSULTATION

During a writing consultation, we will engage in a discussion of challenges related specifically to writing. Writing consultations are different from academic coaching in that the scope of our discussion is limited to the writing and editing processes. Based on your needs, we will discuss writing in a specific genre or discipline; structure and organization; grammar, sentence structure and word choices; quoting, paraphrasing and citing sources. The process is much like developmental editing, but we are working on your writing together in real time.

If you book or attend a writing consultation with me, you accept the following conditions. Please review them carefully.

OUR RELATIONSHIP, AUTHORSHIP & COPYRIGHT

When you submit or share documents with me for use during our writing consultation, you retain copyright for such material. I require no credit or acknowledgement for work completed other than the consultation fee, as listed on http://www.uncannyacademic.com (the Site), at the time of booking. I do not claim any rights to such material by virtue of offering advice and/or feedback on your writing, and I will not use or disclose such material for any reason other than providing my services.

I provide advice on changes that you, your publisher, your advisory committee or other third parties may accept, reject or further amend. The content of any finished work is therefore entirely the responsibility of you or other persons to whom you delegate, license or otherwise assign control over your work. I expressly prohibit the association of Chelsea Larsson or of The Uncanny Academic with any published work, including by way of acknowledgment, unless the author first seeks and receives my written consent to be acknowledged.

You represent and warrant that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to the material that you submit or share; that the material is accurate; that use of the material you supply does not violate this policy and will not cause injury to any person or entity; and that you will indemnify me for all claims resulting from the material you supply. I have the right, but not the obligation, to monitor and refuse any activity or content for any reason at my sole discretion, including but not limited to suspected plagiarism and content that I deem inappropriate. I take no responsibility and assume no liability for any material discussed during our consultation.

SERVICES & PROCEDURE

Writing consultations are 60 minutes in length and are conducted virtually (Google Meet). The purchase of a single writing consultation does not entitle you to between-session support aside from correspondence related to arranging, rescheduling or cancelling consultations in emergency situations.
You will book virtual writing consultations through the Site’s booking system and submit payment at the time of booking. Shortly after booking, you will receive a confirmation email containing a meeting link and information on how to join the session via Google Meet. We will both join the virtual session (Google Meet) at the scheduled time. In the event that you are late, I will attempt to contact you via email/phone/text at the contact information you provided when booking. I will wait 15 minutes before terminating the session and charging the full session rate per the Cancellation policy.

PAYMENT

You agree to pay the consultation fee, as listed on the Site, at the time of booking. Fees are non-refundable, except where permitted by the Cancellation policy.

CANCELLATION POLICY

You agree that it is your responsibility to reschedule or cancel your appointment via the Site’s booking system at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled session. You agree that the fee for a missed session is non-refundable. In the event of extenuating circumstances and following a discussion with you about the reasons you were unable to cancel within the cancellation window, I may, at my discretion, make an exception to this policy. In the event that I waive the session fee and you wish to reschedule, I will make every good faith effort to reschedule your missed session within a week.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The information (documented or verbal) that you share with me during a writing consultation is confidential. However, please be aware that unlike medical and legal relationships, this relationship is not considered a legally confidential relationship; thus, the communications between us are not subject to the protection of any legally recognized privilege. I agree not to disclose any information pertaining to you without your written consent. I will not disclose your name as a reference without your consent.

Confidential Information does not include information that: (a) was in my possession prior to its being furnished by you; (b) is generally known to the public or to your academic or professional industry; (c) is obtained by me from a third party, without breach of any obligation to you; (d) is independently developed by me without use of or reference to your confidential information; or (e) I am required by statute, lawfully issued subpoena or court order to disclose; (f) is disclosed to me and, as a result of such disclosure, I reasonably believe there to be an imminent or likely risk of danger or harm to you or to others; and (g) involves illegal activity. You acknowledge your continuing obligation to raise any questions or concerns over matters related to confidentiality with me in a timely manner.

According to the ethics of my profession, topics may be anonymously and hypothetically shared with other coaching professionals for training, supervision, mentoring, evaluation and for coach professional development and/or consultation purposes. I will always ask for your written permission before sharing anonymized anecdotes for the abovementioned purposes.

RECORD RETENTION

You acknowledge that I have disclosed my record retention policy with respect to documents, information and data acquired or shared during the term of our consulting relationship. Consultation summaries and notes will be maintained by me in a format of my choice (print or digital) for a period of not less than one (1) year. I will not retain copies of documents submitted to or shared with me for the purposes of facilitating your writing consultation: I will either delete my copies or remove myself from shared documents.

WAIVER, LIMITED LIABILITY & APPLICABLE LAW

I attempt to be as accurate as possible. However, I do not warrant that all examples, suggestions or corrections are entirely accurate, complete, reliable, current or error free. I reserve the right to change the services available through this site and my prices without any notice or liability. This site and my services are provided by me on an ‘as is’ and ‘as available’ basis and at your sole risk.
Except as expressly provided in these Terms and Conditions, I make no guarantees, representations or warranties of any kind or nature, express or implied with respect to the coaching services negotiated, agreed upon and rendered. In no event shall I be liable to you for any indirect, consequential or special damages. Notwithstanding any damages that you may incur, my entire liability under these Terms and Conditions and your exclusive remedy shall be limited to the amount actually paid by you to me under these Terms and Conditions.
The failure of either party to enforce any provision of these Terms and Conditions shall not be construed as a waiver or limitation of that party’s right to subsequently enforce and compel strict compliance with every provision of these Terms and Conditions.
These Terms and Conditions shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario.
